Fasting and Temperance
Temperance is self-control—the mastery of one’s desires, passions and especially sensual appetites. It is the antidote to gluttony, which is being dominated by our desires.
Fasting is purposely depriving ourselves of things that can keep us from depending on God to meet our needs. It is abstaining in some significant way from food and possibly drink as well. We don’t do this to lose weight, but to allow ourselves to focus our attention on God and His will for our lives. As such, it is often combined with prayer, guidance and counsel.
Temperance and fasting help us to find that wise balance in our lives; it keeps us dependent upon God and also living as a wise steward of our bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
